AHAN NIPPON KAN AIKIDO
Aikido focuses on conflict resolution rather than overpowering your partner. Instead of meeting force with force, we blend and redirect an attacker’s energy reducing unnecessary harm. Aikido, like yoga, strengthens the brain–body connection by requiring focused awareness of movement, breath, body, and balance. Just as yoga links posture and breath to cultivate mindfulness, aikido links motion and intention, fostering a deeper integration of mind and body in action. Aikido also provides excellent cardiovascular exercise. The movements, footwork, and practice of throws and rolls keep the body in constant motion, elevating the heart rate the same as other aerobic workouts. By combining awareness and coordination, aikido builds stamina and endurance while strengthening the brain–body connection—making it energizing and mindful.
Nippon Kan is the largest Aikido dojo in the Rocky Mountain region. The school was founded in 1978 by Gaku Homma Sensei, who was a student of Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba, as well as other high-ranking instructors, at the Iwama dojo in Japan. Homma Sensei was the last official uchideshi (live-in student) at Iwama dojo and is the best testimonial to the founder’s private life at Iwama during the last years of his life. After the founder’s death, Homma Sensei moved to the United States and opened his independent dojo. Homma Sensei is the creator of Nippon Kan’s unique teaching method that combines kenjutsu (sword techniques) and jojutsu (staff techniques) with taijitsu (open hand techniques).
